Our Soft Spot…

Lilac Cable Crewneck Sweater

Baby, it’s cold outside! Last week’s snow is still lingering on street corners and in parking lots. It’s as if Princeton’s normally beautiful Fall foliage decided to take the year off. The signs all seem to point to a nasty, bitter cold winter ahead. That is, unless you happen to be curled up under a comfy White + Warren cashmere travel wrap, in which case it’ll probably look more like a magical winter wonderland…

For those in the know, cashmere wool is truly a gift from nature, more specifically a gift from the Capra hircus Laniger goat, native to the Himalayan region in Northern India. This region, also known as Kashmir, lends its name to the wool so many of us love and cherish in the less pleasant months of the year. The goats grow multiple coats to fend off the cold: a coarse overcoat on the outside, and a downy, soft undercoat underneath that’s made up of fine, but highly insulating hairs. In the spring, the goats shed their undercoat, leaving us with soft downy hair we recognize as what’s in our favorite cable knit sweater. Kings, Shahs and Emperors all relished the fleecy garments, so much so that they insisted on being painted shown wrapped in cashmere so as to suggest their wealth and power. Wars were truly fought over the rights to trade cashmere wool.

Nowadays, cashmere is a little more affordable and easily acquired (no more trekking through the Himalayas!) We Rouge girls love White +Warren cashmere because it’s made using a fine gauge and not piled unnecessarily high – it’s just the right thickness and softness to be your favorite winter scarf. Plus it comes in fun colors like pumpkin, citrus and sky blue. Just in time for the weather, Rouge is hosting a White + Warren trunk show from today through Sunday (November 6th). Come sip champagne, browse the selection and enjoy 20% all trunk show merchandise!

Forget Taboos: White for Any Season

Coco in White

Only in Paris do you receive Fashion TV with a relatively standard cable subscription. This station plays fashion show after fashion show, right now focusing on this past week’s runway shows in NYC for Spring-Summer 2012 Ready-to-Wear. For those of you not graced with this channel, they do have a website where you can access streaming runway shows and view the different channels for different countries: www.ftv.com. (pretty cool.)

While watching the various runway shows, I was acquainted with Spring-Summer 2012‘s big trend: White. White is running rampant through the SS12 RTW New York shows with flowing white fabrics mixed with structured white ensembles. Diane von Furstenberg claimed “I did something I’ve never done before – I started with white,” opening her show this season with five white looks featuring slouchy dresses and relaxed translucent jackets. New York saw another all white opening during the Nicholas K show and with Cushnie & Ochs’ “Space Age meets ‘Mad Men’” collection.

For the Fall 2011 Couture shows, the big shots like Givenchy, Elie Saab, and Valentino proved to us that although summer is on the outs, white isn’t going anywhere. Forget the fashion faux pas of “no white after labor day”. This passé style law is speculated to have been established by the re-entry into the city by the elite on Labor Day, who then stowed away their summer whites as a farewell to their estival holidays. Laura Fitzpatrick for Time Magazine wrote that this rule has been challenged “as far back as the 1920′s [when] Coco Chanel made white a year-round staple.” If we were to respect this American taboo worldwide, France and the United Kingdom wouldn’t be wearing whites past mid-spring as their ‘Labor Days’ hit in the beginning of May, and besides, haven’t you heard of winter white? I think it’s officially time to put this rule to rest.

So, without further ado, I re-introduce you to: White – for all seasons.

Givenchy Fall 2011 Couture: I’m in love with these elegant open-backed dresses.

Elie Saab Fall 2011 Couture. This collection is absolutely stunning, please take a second to look through the entire show. The models walked right out of a fairytale.

Valentino Fall 2011 Couture
Cushnie & Ochs SS 2012 RTW
Diane von Furstenberg SS12 RTW
Tadashi Sohji SS12 RTW. Beautiful gown.

How will you wear white this fall/winter season?

The Hudson News

September 14, 2011

Today, Women’s Wear Daily announced that one of our favorite denim lines at Rouge, Hudson, is launching a sportswear collection with styles for women and men. WWD reported the designs – all made in Portugal – “consist of woven shirts, tunics, Henleys, hoodies, dresses and military jackets” from “key fabrics [including] lightweight cottons, Modal, cotton voile and burnout styles”.

Also, Hudson is hyping five-pocket denim styles for the Spring, a change from their signature flap pocket style: “Five-pockets add a new dimension to the company” creative director Ben Taverniti commented on the style change. Make sure to keep a lookout for the new style in Rouge this Spring 2012.

My Wrap, Dori.

Cashmere Travel Wrap

This past weekend I spent canoeing, hiking and enjoying the crisp air of Lake Clear, NY, also known as the Adirondacks. As some of you may know, the climate up north can change in the drop of a hat. One moment, sunny and warm, the next, windy and rainy! If there are two things one would consider bringing with them (like if you were deserted on an island), I would resort to an anorak and a cashmere wrap. My wrap and I were so inseparable, my boyfriend named it, affectionately, Dori. And so, my alter ego, providing softness and warmth has provided me with company as well.

Just remember, the next trip you take, bring a wrap!

Haute Weather Pieces

June 12, 2011
Shirah

Hi Ladies,

This past week has truly tested our ability to manage the hot weather present in Princeton. The question thus becomes, “what do I wear to keep cool?!”. Rouge has a particular line, personally one of my favorites, which remains ever stylish and cool in the summer. Calypso St. Barth is by far what strikes me as a summer go-to in my closet.

Lilac Flowers

Their washed cotton beach shirts, are both lightweight and feminine.

Calypso Steven Shirt in Grey

A soft pastel pop of color paired with white denim is a perfect ensemble for scorching 100 degree weather. Come check out our newest arrival,  the Steven Shirt, in three magnificent colors, priced fairly at $99.

Rouge looks forward to helping you with your next haute weather piece!

Style 4811

June 9, 2011
Quinn Connors

This week, “The World’s Most Comfortable Thong” – Hanky Panky’s Original Signature Lace Thong aka style 4811 – celebrated its 25th anniversary. In celebration of this playful, sexy panty, Hanky Panky will launch a collaboration time capsule collection designed by Anna Sui this September, which we hope to carry at rouge.

Gale Epstein and Lida Orzeck began the Made in the USA panty company in 1977, specializing in G-strings, but in the 80s, the ladies switched to making a still sexy, yet more-comfortable-than-a G-string panty. Throughout the years, the New York based company has expanded to carry different undie cuts, bras, and cami-bottom sets. Hanky Panky also carries fun collegiate colors to match your school! Check out the college collections here.

We’re looking forward to the fun designs Anna Sui will come out with for Hanky Panky using her signature purple shades in a color collection called Anna-ver-Sui. Keep an eye out for the collaboration this fall, and in the mean time, stop by rouge to see our fun summer colors ($18) and prints ($22).

Happy 25th Hanky Panky. We love you!

xx, Q.
